Very Sneaky Way to Lessen Bandwidth Twitter

I got a message from @ev that he was playing with a new service that gave recommendations on who to follow on Twitter.   The service he was playing with is http://whoshouldifollow.com/ which for me suggested a bunch of people, I added kevinrose and leolaporte.

Now the first thing I noticed after adding them that device updates (for me that’s IM) was turned off.   I had to manually turn it on so that I receive their updates via IM like I do everyone else I follow.   Now the default in the past was to always automatically get device updates when you started following someone (it was this way up until a few days ago).    Now I understand the problems they have been having with IM and I assume they also have them with SMS (I don’t use it).   As far as I have seen though there hasn’t been an official announcement and this is a bit sneaky behavior.

I applaud them for making the change and do think it’s beneficial for them, but you would think they would have made some kind of announcement.

Feedburner Finally Integrates With Google Accounts

flamocon_190h Feedburner Finally Integrates With Google Accounts

Earlier I had written that Google really needs to integrate it’s reporting services across the board.  Now I still hope that do unyfi their reporting experience, but it seems Feedburner is going to eb the first to get sucked into the already fractured reporting structure that exists for Google’s many services.

Earlier today on April 25 Feedburner posted that they were finally going to integrate their service with the standard google account logins.  This means the same account I login into Gmail, Adsense, etc, and etc. will work with Feedburner.   Using this unification I’m hoping that we’ll be able ot finally embed Adsense into out RSS feeds.   I’m also hoping that the reporting (hint hint Google) can be blended in with Web Analytics.

Whether the reporting structure is going to be absorbed or if this will stay a single login structure for the foreseeable future has yet to be seen.   I have hopes though.

Ashland Community Band Concert 4/27/08

The Ashland Community Band played it’s annual spring concert with the Ashland University Concert Band yesterday at the Hugo Young Theatre. As always I played third trumpet in the the performance.  My grandparents showed up to watch the show, outside of seeing me on the Vermilion High School Alumni Band float in the local Vermilion parades, this is the first time they have seen me perform in fourteen years.

Luckily this time the camera work for the video should be better.   A tripod was used and there was no cuts in the performance.   We only recorded the community band, so while it was a dual performance with the Ashland University Concert Band performing second, that was not recorded.

Next week we don’t have rehearsal, so rehearsal will resume on the thirteenth of next month. Our next performance is a Father’s Day Concert in the park at the Ashland Amphitheater. The last performance of the summer will occur the week of the Ashland County Fair, which the Ashland Community Band has been asked to perform at.

I hope you enjoy the show.

If in the crossposting the video does not come through either go to www.creeva.com to view it, or you can view it on Google Video right here.

Last Night I had a Dream About My Great Grandmother

Last night was strange.   The first part being strange is that I actually had a dream that I can remember.  From my normal perspective I dream next to never.  I’m aware of the human dream mechanisms that everyone does dream, but normally I am unaware that I do it myself.

When I was living in Oregon my great grandmother passed away, unfortunately my wife never had a chance to meet her.   She was considered the “not completely normal” one of the family.   From my perspective, especially now, I can say that she was probably one fo the most normal one of the family.   She was also one of the ones most like me.   She had a voracious appetite for reading and absorbing knowledge.  She didn’t also believe in popular opinion and would find things in her own way.   I think part of her problem was she was born in the wrong era.  I think she would have been absorbed and delighted in the Internet and the way things are today.

The dream mostly consisted of a normal visit where she was staying at my grandparents.   There was just normal talking and I was my current age for whatever reason.  There was nothing contextually strange or out of place and no significant incidents occured.  When she did leave I was crying and my grandparents were questioning why I was upset.   I was going on how she had gotten her doctorate (she hadn’t IRL) and how she was a great woman.   How her views and ideas mattered.   In the dream I had almost worked myself up to a frenzy.    Then I woke up.

The first thing I noticed when I woke up was my face was soaked and covered in tears.   This was one of those dreams that bled over from the dream world to the real world.   I can say I truly miss her, but I don’t think of her that often, and definitely not as often as I should.   I have a few pictures of her and they stand around being a testament of where I’ve come from.   My grandmother used to save up books and give them to me.   I still have quite a few of those books she has given me over the years.  She was a strong lady and I think that life moves on in a strange way.

Why am I writing this?  I think i just want a testament to know that I’m still not in a dream.  That this is what is real.   Grief is a hard thing to deal with and sometimes it hits you at the strangest of times.

Internet Deadman's Switch Part 1

One thing I’ve been working on for awhile is and Internet Deadman’s Switch.  With all of my crossposting and media re-usage activities in the grand scheme this should be fairly trivial.   I am sure however that some things will slip me up.   We’ll start in this section of identifying the goals I wish to acomplish and work through some of the stages in part two.

What do I mean by Deadman’s Switch?

A deadman’s switch is something that is triggered normally to keep you alive.   A quick example is the pressure plate on a riding lawn mower.   The pressure plate must have weight on it or the lawn more will not start and if the weight is removed the lawn mower will shut off.  So essentially one action cause another action to occur when certain variables are met.   My trigger would be my death.  If I didn’t verify if I was alive after a certain period of time to a program/website/etc.  the a serious of scripts and actions would trigger leaving behind all the information I wish to impart on those behind me.

Why do I want a Deadman’s Switch?

This idea started in my head about 7-8 years.   There used to be a website that had you check in once a month and if you didn’t log in it will send off emails to the ones you care about (or the ones you don’t).   This gives you the final word and allows you to send of those things that might be important.   I can leave my wife information about all my accounts and password, any relevant information that she may need and won’t be able to gather up, parting words to friends and families.   I would also thanks to my current setup be able to post to all my social networks and make an announcement of my death.   This I find intriguing and I’ll at least go through all the steps of implementing this (whether I actually use it and maintain it will remain to be seen).

What would I send?

I’ve broken down what I would want to send into four sections:

  • My wife - I can deliver my final message, copies of important documents, access to all of my accounts and any other relevant information she needs
  • My family - I would send each family member a personal message from the beyond - I also would send them a follow up to do with my wife in case something happened to her at the same time, that way there would still be someone i could trust that would have access to the information they may need to clean up my estate.
  • Friends - I would send each of my “high level” friends an individual message - if somehow my whole family is taken out in one full attack - I don’t think I’m passing any of my personal information off to them.
  • Public Internet at Large - this is broken into a few more sections, but essentially I’ll be leaving a video, audio postings, status updates to my social networks (”I’m dead thanks for all the fish”)), and a few final blog postings.
The trick to all of this is of course is reliant on a few things.   The first and foremost being that I can send email after I’m dead.   It also can not be reliant on my home PC (if a housefire hits or a tornado takes me out I don’t want my home to be the weakest link).   Finally whatever script I use must be able to pull from an FTP site (for the audio and video).    Once those can be accompished I’m fairly sure I can get everything else done.

When would I send it?

This is the other conundrum isn’t it?  How do you net tell everyone you have passed on while you are still alive (that could be embarrassing).    You need to pick a time period that seems suitable to you (every 12 hours is not suitable).  I’m thinking either every two weeks or every month I would have to login and verify that yes I am still alive and kicking.  The only problem this would really cause is if I’m kidnapped or held hostage.   The chances of those being so minimal that it is unlikely so I won’t really take those into account.   So to be safe I’ll set it for somewhere between 14 and 31 days.

Another thing I would like to do is configure it to be staggered.  That way I’ll be able to send a message to my wife warning her about the upcoming announcement of what is going to occur before it actually does.  Then to family, then to friends, and finally to the Internet as a whole.   This would keep it from being one big whirlwind hitting everyone at once like a ton of bricks.   I don’t want someone completely freaked out when they see a new youtube movie of my me uploaded.    So a staggered release would be the best scenario (if it’s possible).

How am I going to do this?

You’ll just have to wait for part 2.

Mowing the Lawn - What a Waste

148854418_d720fa8390 Mowing the Lawn - What a Waste

I know I’m on a lawn kick (if you didn’t get it from my last post) but I was thinking today at what a waste it truly is to mow the lawn.   It wastes fuel.  It destroys plants that may be beautiful and grow free.  It releases green house gases into the atomsphere.   As good neighbors however, we are expected to maintain a level of lawn care. However with gasoline approaching four dollars a gallon is this still wise.  Isn’t there better things we can do with our time and our money.  What must change in our social norms and order to come up with something else, a better way.

Yes I mowed the lawn earlier tonight so it was at the top of my head and wanted to share. I know deep down most of you don’t care.  However like everything else I write this is for my venting and I’m just hoping you enjoy the insight into myself.

Get Off My Lawn

I’m one  of those people.   The people that are annoying.   The people that don’t want you walking across their lawn.   The ones that threaten loudly to call the police about trespassing (but never do).   I have a theory about this.   I was one of those kids that hiked across alot of lawns.   As a matter of fact there was about 3 lawns I hiked through every single day I was in middle school since it cut about a quarter mile off of my walk.  Granted I had to cut straight through the area between two houses and I didn’t do it when there was someone in the driving (alot of 12 year olds that are alone don’t usually have that brazen of an attitude to flaunt it in front of authority.

My teenage years however gave me lots of time to get yelled at for cutting through lawns.   Once we destroyed a guy’s mailbox in retaliation for yelling at us one night.   It was beaten in to me.   Though I flaunted authority and didn’t care even going so far to save 15 steps I would cross someone’s lawn.  Now I’m an adult.  I am the authority.

I’m not one of the anal retentive people with immaculate lawns, far from it.   I take care of it as little as I need to, and I prefer it that way.   I’m sure my neighbors would love it it I was like my grandfather.   He’s one of the lawn hobbyist that mows his lawn more then once a week.   I would almost imagine if it was feasible he would take out scissors and trim it all by hand.   Though if he did it would be too long where he started and it would never end.    I think because of that I;ll never be that way.

But here I am protective of my space.  Space that I have intruded upon others for.  Maybe that makes me selfish.  Maybe that makes me a hypocrite.  Possibly though I am just a human being who wants to be left alone.   Whatever it is sometimes I don’t want to deal with it.  At least though I’ve come full circle and I bet half those people whose lawns I did cut across were just like me as a kid.

A Co-Worker Passed Away Last Night

One of my co-workers passed away in his sleep last night.  He was a nice guy that was always there and willing to help you out.   He was a smoking buddy for me and someone with whom I could discuss cars with.   While his loss will be missed, most people here are taking it harder then I am.   After being a pallbearer for my best friend, I’m not sure I could get upset with the loss of a co-worker/casual friend the same way ever again.

When I was working for tech support at Symantec we once had someone pass away in their cubicle.   It was almost surreal after the fact.   I knew who the guy was but he wasn’t on my team so I didn’t really talk to him. But from my understanding he was sitting there for over an hour hunched over and people thought he was asleep.   This was about 1 cubicle row over from me.   It was odd but not upsetting to me.

I can say for my co-worker that passed away last night, that I’m happy he was away from the office and hopefully passed away in his sleep.    The last conversation we had was about Dodge cars made in the 60’s and 70’s  - he also talked about how he used to tour the strip in his hometown for girls when he was a teenagers driving these cars that were destined to be the classic iconography of the American automobile.

Hopefully now he is sitting again in his 1969 Dodge Charger that he owned in his younger years and cruising that same strip.  Reliving the happiest moments of his life.   He will be missed and honored.

Google App Engine

Well I managed to get into the Google App Engine beta, one problem though, I’m not a developer.   I had meant to loan the account to the Gnome Conduit project for use in intergration, but one of the actual developers has already managed to get an invite.  This however may be an excuse for me to learn python like I’ve been wanting to.

I’m such a google whore.  I’m still trying to figure out which products of their’s that I don’t use.

I Don't Even Consider My Operating System Anymore

I guess that’s the point.   Most people use windows and take for granted what OS they are using.  I however am I bit different.  I move between XP, Ubuntu, and OSX in a seamless fashion.  I do alot of work via the browser so I’m sure that is part of it, but I utilize the application that are suited for their purposes within the individual OS as they are meant to be.

Granted some programs are cross platform, like I use Firefox 3.0 on everything now.  But for the most part I can be with each operating system and work with it’s unique flow.   Sometimes I get privately annoyed that a tool is available for one OS or another, but that gets put aside quickly as I loko for the the right solution for me platform.

Because of this approach I am really looking forward to cloud computing and ubiquitous web interfaces.   I’m not sure the back end matters at all any more as much as it does when the functions are there to get the job done.
